Building a stronger workforce to care for our elders
As the older population grows, so does the need to improve the geriatric assessment skills of nurses. This is why the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment Skills Education Programme for Nurses – Can You See the Big Picture? project exists. It aims to reduce the geriatric skills shortage among nurses by developing a new nursing education curriculum for Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA). The curriculum will be offered in the form of continuing and life learning education courses and will be possible to integrate into universities’, higher education institutions’, and vocational education and training institutions’ degree programmes. In other words, the project helps train nurses to provide better care for our aging population.
What is Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment?
CGA considers all aspects of an older adult’s life—functional and cognitive abilities, social support, financial status, and environmental factors, as well as physical and mental health. Successful CGA enhances quality of life, delays the progression of frailty, and reduces both hospital admissions and the length of hospital stays. However, without proper education and training, it can be challenging for nurses to grasp the full picture of an older person’s health, as the assessment is very multifaceted.
